ASU Gymnastics: Sun Devils set new season high, fall to Cardinal

In its annual pink meet on Saturday, the Arizona State Sun Devils fell at home to the Stanford Cardinal 195.775 to 195.200 despite setting a new season-best score.

It was an afternoon filled with career highs for the Gym Devils.

ASU started off slow on the vault with both freshman Graycee Rushton and sophomore Corinne Belkoff scoring 9.650.

The trend continued and nobody was able to score above a 9.725.

The Cardinal had a stronger start on the uneven bars. Junior Elizabeth Price only competed on bars due to an unspecified injury. However, she continued to shine as one of the top gymnasts in the conference, earning a 9.950 and coming in first place on bars.

The team finished with a 49.075 despite senior Rachel Daum’s low score of 9.125 after falling mid-routine.

The Gym Devils came back strong the uneven bars with freshman Morgan Hart ending her routine with a stuck landing and earning a career high of 9.825.

Rushton also got a career high of 9.775. Sophomore Morgan Wilson fell at the beginning of her routine leaving her with a 9.300. Freshman Ashley Szafranski recovered for the team closing out the bars with a score of 9.850.

Stanford kept its momentum going, scoring high on the vault in the second rotation with every score at or above a 9.725.

The Gym Devils moved to the beam for the third rotation. Senior Beka Conrad had solid routine with stuck landing, earning first place on beam and a career high of 9.850.

“I’m honestly really happy I did get that score but there’s definitely room for improvement,” Conrad said.

Szafranski continued to stand out for ASU with stuck landing and a career high of 9.825 on the beam.

Stanford had a hard time on the floor posting the lowest score out of all the apparatuses with a 48.625.

The Gym Devils moved to floor for the last rotation. Freshman Mekayla Jones had a clean routine with a big final pass earning her a 9.800. Belkoff stepped out of bounds on her first pass but nailed the rest of her routine, earning a 9.850 and tying her career high. Sophomore Katelyn Lentz also had a solid routine; she earned a 9.825.

Stanford closed out the meet on the beam with senior Nicolette McNair starting the team off with a 9.850. The trend would continue as Daum and senior Danielle McNair also scored 9.850 securing the win for Stanford.

The Gym Devils will host Utah at Wells Fargo Arena next Saturday.
