ASU Gymnastics: No. 13 Gym Devils face first road test of the season at TWU

The No. 13 ranked Sun Devils (2-1) travel to Texas Woman’s University (0-1) for their first away meet of the season on Saturday, January 12.

The Gym Devils began their season with a second-place finish in a quad-meet, beating out then No. 23 Minnesota and Illinois-Chicago while falling to then No. 19 Missouri.

Star sophomore Cairo Leonard-Baker led the Devils with an all-around 39.200 score. She scored 9.900s on bars and floor, the highest scores for the Devils in both events.

Besides Leonard-Baker, the Gym Devils are being led by a loaded senior class. Seniors Kaitlyn Szafranski and Morgan Wilson tied for ASU’s highest score on vault with 9.800s. Senior Justine Callis also earned an ASU best beam score with a 9.800.

The Gym Devils hit the road for the first time this season to take on the Pioneers of Texas Woman’s University. Last week, TWU fell short to Kentucky in its first meet of the season.

Co-captains Bria Northrop and Erin Alderman led the Pioneers. Junior, Northrop scored a 9.800 on bars and a meet high 9.850 on floor. Senior, Alderman scored 9.825s on both beam and floor.

One of TWU’s best events last week was bars where they scored a 48.400, good enough for No. 25 in the nation so far.

The meet is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. Saturday, January 12 at Texas Women’s University in Denton, TX.
