Arizona State Gymnastics performed stunningly at its first meet Wednesday following a 10-day break. In the first of two meets this week, the Sun Devils also broke their season high in scoring with a total of 197.450 against the Arizona Wildcats.
From start to finish the Sun Devils kept it rolling and continued to put up great scores throughout each event. Wednesday night at Desert Financial Arena was the Gym Devils third meet in a row scoring higher than a 49.000 with a 49.325 on vault. On bars, the Gym Devils scored a 49.400, the highest score for them in that category all season.
The remarkable performance continued on the floor with ASU putting up their fourth consecutive score of 49.000 in that area. To cap things off, the Gym Devils also put up their highest score on beam since 2009 with a 49.350.
Head coach Jay Santos was thrilled after the meet, following the cancellation of a match-up with Stanford on Saturday.
“Today was an extra opportunity to give this team a chance to get a score,” Santos said. “They showed up right from the start and took it all the way to the finish today. No let up at all.”
Santos said he believes the team is in a good spot in the energy department from top to bottom and is really excited about what is going on right now and in the coming weeks as Arizona State approaches the Pac-12 Championships.
Arizona State got notable performances from the team throughout the meet. Freshman Emily White scored career highs on bars and beam.
“Today was a really great day for me. I just feel like today it kind of all clicked,” said White, who set her career high with a 9.925 on bars. “Just doing what I know how to do in practice and doing it on the floor when the pressures on. That was a really great feeling and I feel like this will definitely build my confidence going forward in practices and future competitions.”
Sophomore Jordyn Jaslow made her collegiate debut Wednesday after a season ending injury last season. Santos was happy with how she performed during ASU’s mid-week meet.
“I’m really proud of Jordyn,” Santos said. “She’s been plugging away. Great to get her out there, great to see what she did, I think that was a great performance. She wasn’t slated to be in the lineup but we made a change after warmups. She handled it great, I’m really proud of her today.”
By adding a rivalry meet against Arizona, ASU was able to pick up an extra meet after a cancellation with Stanford last weekend. Now, the Gym Devils will head to Seattle, on Sunday to take on Washington.
