ASU Football: Sun Devils Week 3 matchup with Colorado canceled

Two days after Arizona State Football had to cancel its game versus Cal, the Sun Devils are canceling their Week 3 contest against Colorado.

Vice President for Arizona State Athletics Ray Anderson released a statement on Sunday announcing that ASU cannot play against the Buffaloes on Nov. 21 due to the team being under the 53-man minimum threshold.

“We regrettably have to invoke the Pac-12’s football game cancellation policy for this week’s game at Colorado due to positive COVID-19 cases among student-athletes and staff,” Anderson said. “The cancellation of another game is very difficult to accept for all of us, but it continues to be the right decision under the circumstances. The health, safety and welfare of our student-athletes is our number one priority and will continue to be at the forefront of every decision.”

On Friday, multiple players and team personnel, including head coach Herm Edwards, tested positive for COVID-19.

The game against Colorado will be declared a no contest, under the Pac-12’s policy.

“We have consulted with the Conference and Colorado officials and have decided to make this prompt announcement so alternative scheduling options can be considered in the overall interests of the Conference and our peer student-athletes and coaches,” Anderson said.

The Sun Devils next game is scheduled to be on Nov. 28 at home against Utah. All ASU football media sessions have also been canceled until further notice.

“We will continue to monitor our testing results and stay in close communication with our University, local public health officials and the Pac-12 Conference,” Anderson said.
