During Thursday’s game against Northern Arizona, redshirt junior offensive linemen Joey Ramos exited the game with an injury during the second quarter. ASU head coach Herm Edwards announced during Monday’s media availability that Ramos will be out for the season.
“I misspoke after the game with Joey Ramos, and I know better than that,” Edwards said. “He had a high ankle, but it’s a little worse than we anticipated. He’s out for the season…I talked to Joey and told him I apologize for saying what I said because I should know better. But I was just taking it for what I heard on the sideline. I should have got all the information.”
In his post-game press conference on Thursday, Edwards said Ramos suffered a “high ankle” injury during the second quarter of ASU’s 40-3 victory over NAU. Edwards also noted that the injury wasn’t serious.
“I mean it’s his ankle, you know, he’s a lineman. He don’t have to run 40 or nothing,” Edwards said on Thursday. “He’s all right. I mean, it’s a high ankle…he’s a tough guy, and then hopefully we get him back.”
Ramos was vying for a starting role this season, competing in many positional battles on the offensive line. The 6-foot-5 offensive linemen started at right tackle for graduate offensive linemen Des Holmes on Thursday after Holmes was ruled out for Thursday’s game. Edwards revealed during Monday’s availability that Holmes is questionable for Saturday’s game against Oklahoma State.
Ramos transferred to Tempe this season from Iowa State, where he mostly played special teams. In 2021 and 2019, Ramos appeared in 13 and 12 games, respectively, mainly as a member of the special teams unit. However, in 2020 Ramos played eight games, starting in five. Ramos is a Phoenix native and played for Deer Valley Football.
