The dynamic duo of Josh Huestis and Dwight Powell were too much for the Sun Devils on the boards as Arizona State (16-6, 5-4) split the Bay Area road trip Saturday afternoon, falling 76-70 to the Stanford Cardinal (14-7, 5-4).
ASU was out rebounded 40-32 in what proved to be a tough matchup for the Sun Devils down low. The Sun Devils stuck around in the first half, traded baskets with the Cardinal, and took a slim 34-33 lead into the locker room.
Stanford came out hot after halftime and went on a 19-5 run over the first seven minutes of the second half to give the Cardinal a 52-39 lead. ASU tried to climb back into the game and came within three points with 1:09 remaining, after Jermaine Marshall connected from behind the arc, but the Sun Devils couldn’t complete the comeback.
Jonathan Gilling continued his roller coaster season, going 0 of 5 from the field. Jahii Carson registered 24 points and three assists on 9 of 17 shooting. Marshall added 22 points.
Powell starred for Stanford, scoring 28 points, while Chasson Randle added 21 in the winning effort.
The Sun Devils were ranked 40th in Joe Lunardi’s latest S-curve on ESPN and should still be “in” the NCAA tournament field when the next bracket projections are released.
Arizona State now comes home on Thurs. Feb. 6 to face off against Oregon State at 9:00 p.m. MT.
