The Cal Golden Bears upset ASU in the League of Legends CStar League Tournament held at Dreamhack Anaheim on Friday.

ASU was the heavy favorites going into the grand finals matchup, being ranked as high as #8 on the ESPN Coach’s College League of Legends poll. Cal just missed the top 25 in the most recent poll.

The two teams met a week before this matchup, with ASU coming out on top 2-0 in a 3-game set.

The first game on the main stage would see ASU get out to an early lead, only to have Cal answer right back and secure the win.

The second game brought a more aggressive ASU squad, taking a big lead in the first 10 minutes of the game.

However, Cal was able to respond to ASU’s aggression accordingly and clawed their way back into the game to win it, sweeping ASU 2-0 in a 3-game set.

“No worries,” said League of Legends Coach, Ben “Baepsae” Duan, after the loss. “My team’s doing okay. Of course, we wanted to win, but it was a good experience overall.”

ASU has an overall record of 5-0 in the Western Conference of the College League of Legends League, with one of their wins being over Cal.

Despite the loss, Duan only has high hopes for his team. “We’re confident that we’ve adapted and that we’re the better team,” said Duan.

The ASU League of Legends team continues to look to be one of the best in the country. This is just a bump of the road for a team that will continue to compete for the rest of the season.
