The last time Arizona State faced Oklahoma they lost their first game of the 2013-2014 season, and after falling to No. 3 Central Oklahoma on Thursday night, they came into the University of Oklahoma ready for a new day.
The Sun Devils were able to get on the board first when Assistant Captain Liam Norris netted a goal with 11:40 remaining on the clock. The assist went to both Ryan Belonger and Connor Mailey.
The Sooners were able to rebound, after Mason Miller scored at the 9:57 mark making it a tied game.
The first period was getting ready to come to a close, but then with 43 seconds remaining Michael Cummings found Chris Blessing for a Sun Devil goal.
With the start of the second period, the Sooners took a penalty at 19:39 for high sticking on Jeffrey Coates. Ryan Stouffer followed him afterward with a bench minor giving the maroon and gold a five on three chance. That opportunity appeared to be too good to miss for the sun devils, because defenseman Connor Schmidt connected with a goal putting ASU up 3-1. Liam Norris and Ryan Belonger had the assist.
Oklahoma was able to get on the board again with a Senate Patton goal, but that wouldn’t be enough. Liam Norris scored a one timer for ASU, followed by a goal from Connor Mailey.
It was a turn of events for the third period, in which the scoreboard remained frozen at 5-2. Arizona State did have another five on three opportunity at the very end of the game, but the Sooners were able to complete the kill.
Arizona State may have won 5-2 tonight, but they will have another matchup against the Sooners tomorrow night at 4:00pm.
