TEMPE – Arizona State men’s basketball head coach Bobby Hurley will not have his contract extended, as officially announced by the university and Sun Devil Athletics Director Graham Rossini.
Hurley spent 11 years as the Sun Devils’ head coach, recording five winning seasons, a 185-167 overall record (.526) and a 90-115 conference record (.439) across nine Pac-12 campaigns and two seasons in the Big 12. He’s earned the second-most wins in program history, only behind Ned Wulk, who registered 406 victories across 25 seasons from 1957-82.
“Bobby Hurley has made incredible contributions to the sport of basketball,” Rossini said in the university’s announcement. “And that certainly includes many memorable moments during his time as our Head Coach. While we will not be extending his contract, we are so grateful for the 11 years that Coach, Leslie, Cameron, Sydney, and Bobby Jr. spent with us at ASU. We wish Coach well moving forward and we are thankful for his leadership while at ASU.”
The announcement comes after Hurley’s Sun Devils were eliminated from the Phillips 66 Big 12 Men’s Basketball Tournament, falling to No. 7 Iowa State 91-42. Even with the loss, ASU finished the 2025-26 season with a winning 17-16 overall record. Yet, Hurley’s only managed one other winning season since his 2019-20 campaign.
Since 2019-20, Hurley’s teams have posted a 92-98 overall record and made the NCAA Tournament just once, getting eliminated in the first round in 2023.
In his four seasons prior to the 2019-20 season – which didn’t feature a tournament due to the COVID-19 pandemic – he made the tournament twice, including the memorable 2017-18 season, which saw the Sun Devils ranked as high as No. 3 in the AP Poll after a 12-0 start.
Hurley’s contract is set to officially expire in June.
“It’s been a long road,” Hurley said after the loss to ISU. “It’s been a special time. Two of my kids graduated from ASU, I’ve had the opportunity to coach some fantastic young men and had some terrific moments over the years.”
