Arizona State Baseball’s game against UNLV in Las Vegas on Tuesday has been cancelled due to a positive COVID-19 test and further contact tracing within the UNLV program, according to Sun Devil Athletics. No word was given on a potential rescheduling of the contest.
“We were very much looking forward to our student-athletes having the opportunity to compete at Las Vegas Ballpark in front of fans,” UNLV Director of Athletics Desiree Reed-Francois said in a statement. “The cancellation is dissapointing, but the health and safety of all involved remains our top priority.”
The game was originally scheduled for March 30, but was rescheduled to Tuesday a few days prior. The game would have been the second of the Sun Devils’ home-and-home single-game series with UNLV, as the Rebels grabbed a 10-9 victory over ASU back on March 16 in Phoenix.
This is the first cancellation the Sun Devils have had in the 2021 season due to COVID-19 protocols within its own program or others.
The Sun Devils (18-9, 7-5 Pac-12) are coming off a weekend in which they won two of three games against Washington in Seattle. ASU will begin a three-game series with No. 20 Stanford on Friday night at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. The Cardinal currently sit atop the Pac-12 Conference with a record of 19-6 (6-3 Pac-12).
