Arizona State took game two of its series with Oregon on Saturday, winning 9-8 at home on a Jordan Aboites walk-off single.
While the Sun Devil offense was able to muster four hits, they lacked the consistency to put balls in play when it mattered early on, going 0-5 with runners in scoring position as Oregon got out to a 4-0 lead.
That was until the fifth inning, where the Devils rattled off three runs to make it a one-run game.
Arizona State finished with 13 hits on the night, three of which belonged to David Greer.
Greer also finished with five RBIs in the game.
Despite being down 8-7 in the ninth, an unlikely cast of Chris Beall, Ryan Lillard and Jordan Aboites were able to deliver and seal a 9-8 comeback victory.
The going was tough for starter Eli Lingos, who gave up a run in the first inning and pitched in a hole all evening.
Lingos went 3.1 innings, giving up five hits, three walks and four runs, two of which were earned. The silver lining ended up being his three strikeouts.
Arizona State extended its winning streak to five games and now boasts an 11-9 conference record.
Player of the Game: David Greer
Greer finished with three hits, including two doubles, and drove in five runs.
Unsung Hero: Jordan Aboites
Aboites finished with two hits in the game, including the game-winning single in the ninth. He was batting .143 entering the contest.
Biggest Concern:
The command on the mound continues to be the team’s biggest issue. Between Lingos, James Ryan, Ryan Hingst and Chris Isbell, seven walks were issued, just four less than the 11 hits the group gave up.
What’s next?
Arizona State will wrap up the series with Oregon tomorrow at 12:30. Should the Sun Devils win tomorrow, it would mark the team’s third consecutive series sweep.
