The Arizona State soccer team suffered its first overtime loss in nearly two years, as they fell to No. 24 Texas Tech 1-0.
With 32 seconds remaining in the first period of overtime, Red Raider forward Briana Rohmer headed the ball past Sun Devil goal keeper Chandler Morris for the game-winner.
“It went into overtime, it could have gone either way. I was really disappointed we didn’t play our game at all,” ASU head coach Kevin Boyd said. “To their credit, they kept come coming at it and ultimately got one. If you let the team have the ball all game, then they’re gonna get one eventually.”
Boyd acknowledged that his team was not sound in the technical aspects of the game.
“Our quality was really poor, just plain and simple. We struggled passing the ball in a straight line. Their pressure good, but even when there wasn’t any pressure we were struggling handling the ball,” Boyd said. “We couldn’t settle it, we couldn’t trap it, we were awful all the way around.”
The Sun Devils outshot Texas Tech 7-4 in the first half, and nearly got a goal early into the game.
“Early on Devin [Marshall] had one in the first half, she beat the keeper and slotted one by her. Their defender did a really good job getting inside the goal and on the goal line and blocked it on the line itself,” Boyd said. “It was our best chance.”
Boyd said his team was just unable to get things going all game.
“We just fell apart. I told everyone at half time that we’re our own worst enemies, and if we can correct ourselves, we would be better,” Boyd said. “We’re a much better team than that.”
The loss now leaves the Sun Devils with a 4-2 record. The team will face off against Southern Utah on Sunday at 11 am for their final game of the Cats’ Classic.
