Arizona State nets 12-1 win over San Diego State

Arizona State capped off their weekend series against the San Diego State Aztecs with a 12-1 blowout victory.

The Sun Devils (9-0) once again showcased their depth on the offensive end with eight players scoring, and four players netting two goals. Forward Danny McAuliffe and defenseman Darcy Charrois were tied for the team lead with five points.

“What I liked most on offense is that we kept going for goals even in the third. It wasn’t to run up the score, but in big games before we’ve sort of let up on the gas in the third. We’re trying to develop a legitimate killer instinct, and we did that tonight,” head coach Greg Powers said.

Goaltender Joe D’Elia was also extremely effective between the pipes for the Sun Devils. He had a save percentage of .957, saving 22 of 23 shots.

“This series gives us a little bit more confidence. The last two weekends we haven’t really played to our potential, but we’re going to use this series as a stepping stone for next week,” D’Elia said.

The first period was the most tightly contested of them all. The Sun Devils did not strike until the 7:58 mark when forward Kale Dolinski poked the puck into the net for the power play goal. Three minutes later forward Ben Findlay scored off of a rebound from Charrois. The Aztecs kept it close in the first period due to strong play from goaltender Alex Corbin who saved 14 out of 16 shots.

In the second and third periods, however, Corbin could not stop an onslaught of scoring from the Sun Devils. The team put in four goals in the second period and added another six goals in the third to close out the game. The Aztecs’ only goal came at the 15:33 mark in the third period from forward Kevin Vaughan.

The Sun Devils will next host Eastern Michigan Thursday night at 8:30 p.m. at Oceanside Ice Arena.
