No. 15 Arizona State (20-6, 9-5) came into Berkeley on Sunday trying to come back from their worst loss of the season against Stanford on Friday, but were unsuccessful in that attempt, as the No. 22 California Golden Bears (18-7, 10-4) came away victorious, 74-63.
Cal went into halftime clinging to a 32-30 lead, but started the second half on a 11-0 run to pull away from ASU. The Sun Devils cut the lead to five points with under three minutes remaining, but were unable to come all the way back.
California’s big three led the way all game long. Senior guard Afure Jemerigbe tallied a career-high 23 points, while junior guard Brittany Boyd had 21 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. Junior forward Reshanda Gray came away with her second double-double of the year against ASU, as she put up 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Redshirt sophomore guard Katie Hempen led the Sun Devils in scoring with 12 points, and freshman forward Sophie Brunner had eight points and 10 rebounds.
With the win, California is now in sole position of second place in the Pac-12, with Arizona State a game behind.
ASU will look to bounce back when they square off against Colorado at 6:30 p.m. MT Friday in Tempe.
